AusPost opens three new outback stores for rural communities
Australia Post has expanded essential postal services in remote communities across the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland, in partnership with Outback Stores.
The initiative uses existing community retail hubs to host local post offices, improving access to delivery and banking services for residents in isolated regions.
Access to basic administrative, delivery and banking infrastructure remains a significant logistical challenge in regional Australia.
By incorporating postal operations into indigenous-owned general stores and roadhouses, the partnership offers structured parcel collection, mail handling, and retail financial services without dedicated post office facilities.
According to Australia Post representative Sarah Coe, maintaining network coverage in isolated regions requires adaptable operational models.
Coe noted that the post office system remains a crucial link for remote populations where alternative service providers are scarce, adding that collaborating with local retail operators allows the postal service to meet regional requirements while generating nearby employment options.
“Our community stores are often at the heart of remote communities. Through our partnership with Australia Post, we are helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities access essential services, strengthen local opportunities, and stay connected to the people and services that matter most,” said Michael Borg, Outback Stores’ CEO.
The partnership aims to roll out modernised postal touchpoints across regional general stores, seeking to streamline logistics and reduce operational isolation for residents in remote Australia.
Locations participating in the expanded network include:
- Northern Territory: Wirliyajarrayi, Nyirripi, Lagulalya, Ntaria Supermarket and Campground, Wetenngerr, Engawala, Bonya, Urapunga, Nitjpurru, Janyima and Amanbidji.
- Western Australia: Warmun Roadhouse, Kundat Djaru Community Store, Beagle Bay and Yiyili Community Store.
- Queensland: Gununamanda Store.
