Walmart deploys AI strategies to boost Christmas engagement

Walmart has launched AI-powered shopping experiences and upgraded in-store tools as the retailer gears up for the upcoming holiday season.

The experiences, available starting last weekend, include AI-powered party planning, AI-generated audio summaries, and shoppable 3D spaces.

To plan for an occasion, customers can ask Walmart’s GenAI-powered digital assistant, Sparky, to instantly craft a curated list of everything they need – from decorations to champagne and confetti.

The new AI-generated summaries can synthesise product descriptions and reviews into short, digestible audio clips, helping customers make purchases on the go. The feature is available across more than 1000 premium beauty products.

The ‘Deck the Halls in 3D’ feature allows shoppers to step into designed spaces instead of scrolling through endless pages of home decor. To form such spaces, Walmart utilises AI to transform simple product photos into 3D images.

In addition, the ‘Dynamic Showroom’ function lets shoppers view different spaces and swap out furnishings to match their preferences, while the ‘Shop the Background’ tool enables customers to click on the products and add them directly to their carts.

Aside from the AI experiences, Walmart has added some new in-store shopping tools to its app, offering customers a more convenient and hassle-free shopping experience at local stores.

These include an in-store savings tool, which allows shoppers to check what items are for sale in their local Walmart store, and enhanced search and navigation, which shows the item’s location in the store as well as in-stock availability.

“The most wonderful time of the year should be joyful, and with the power of AI and technology, we’re making that possible,” said Tracy Poulliot, SVP of shopping experiences, Walmart US.

“Whether customers are holiday shopping in our stores or from the comfort of home, we’re giving them the tools to check off their lists quicker and easier than ever before,” Poulliot added.
