Dodgy ‘Clean Air’ heater ads found to breach standards
Clean Air Woodheaters has been found in breach of Australia’s advertising standards over claims its wood heaters produce “virtually no smoke” and do not contribute to the Greenhouse Effect.
Two cases were considered by the Advertising Standards Community Panel and published by Ad Standards.
One claim, published on the Clean Air Woodheaters website, stated that “virtually no smoke or other gases are released”, describing the heaters’ emissions as “just clean warm air”.
The panel was asked to determine whether the statement was factual and supported by appropriate evidence and found it breached the Environmental Claims Code.
A second statement on the website claimed that burning wood in a Clean Air heater “does not contribute to the ‘Greenhouse Effect'”. The company said emissions from burning wood were comparable to those released when timber naturally decays or burns in a bushfire, while also claiming its slow-combustion heaters produce low emissions.
“Clean Air manufactures slow combustion wood heaters that utilise low emissions into the atmosphere. That’s why people like yourself are making the right choice for now and the future with the purchase of a Clean Air Wood Heater,” the company said on its website.
The panel also found this statement breached the Environmental Claims Code.
Both rulings were classified under the House Goods Services category and related to claims published on the company’s website.
