Melbourne forecast as top parcel delivery destination this year

Melbourne has emerged as the top parcel delivery destination for online shopping, with five of its suburbs forecast to be among the biggest drivers of online shopping this year.

CouriersPlease expects Melbourne Central, Pakenham, Sydney Central, Adelaide Central, Berwick, Point Cook, Sunbury, and Epping to be the top eight suburbs to drive online shopping growth nationwide.

This is despite NSW being projected to be the largest parcel delivery volume destination by state this year.

“A returning workforce to the capital city CBDs likely fuelled last year’s figures, as employees choose to receive parcels at work, where permitted,” said CouriersPlease CEO Richard Thame.

“Figures from 2023 showed Victoria, NSW and South Australia recorded some of the highest numbers of office days compared with remote-working days last year. We expect parcel delivery volumes to CBDs to grow further this year as employers continue to increase the proportion of office-based days for hybrid workers.”

Pakenham overtook Sydney for the first time, thanks to its growing population, earning the reputation as one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia.

Berwick, which does not have a local shopping centre, also witnessed additional residents in the previous years.

“We can already see how housing affordability is driving growth in areas such as Caboolture and Pakenham. In South Australia, Adelaide topped the list, but Mount Barker was second and this suburb is one of the city’s fastest-growing areas,” Thame said.
