Instacart launches end-to-end shopping app inside ChatGPT
American grocery e-commerce platform Instacart has launched a shopping app on ChatGPT, becoming the first grocer to offer an embedded, end-to-end shopping and instant checkout service within the context of a conversation.
The integration allows users to move directly from grocery or meal ideas in ChatGPT to home delivery using Instacart’s retail network and fulfilment system.
Instacart CTO Anirban Kundu said the partnership aims to advance AI-driven online shopping.
“Built on Agentic Commerce Protocol, this experience brings intelligent, real-time support to one of the most essential parts of daily life: Getting groceries to feed your family,” he explains.
“Together, we’re creating a seamless and secure way for people to turn simple conversations into real-world action, helping customers go from inspiration to a full cart delivered from the store to their door with ease.”
ChatGPT can surface the Instacart app when prompted with a request that begins with “Instacart,” such as: “Instacart, can you help me shop for apple pie ingredients?”.
Once opened, and after the user signs in, the app identifies relevant items from local retailers and presents a ready-to-review cart.
The integration supports secure credit-card payments within the conversation. Digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay will follow. Stripe is powering the transaction flow.
Instacart said its retail network and data assets position the business for AI-enabled commerce, citing more than 1800 retail partners, nearly 100,000 stores, and a catalogue of more than 2 billion product instances.
The integration will also provide real-time inventory and pricing, along with personalised recommendations informed by past orders.
“Powering grocery shopping inside an AI agent requires technology that understands constantly changing, highly local inventory and converts it into accurate, real-time decisions,” Kundu added.
”Instacart’s platform does just that.”
