EBay Australia opens up US sneaker sales, launches Authenticity Guarantee

Online marketplace eBay is stepping up its sneaker game by opening almost 90,000 new sneaker listings which are to be fulfilled direct from the US.

The move is back by the launch of its ‘Authority Guarantee’ program, which, once purchased, will put products through a dedicated authentication centre in New York or Las Vegas for physical inspection, and will cover the cost of the item’s international delivery to Australia.

The service will initially be available for sneakers sold for more than US$150, or pre-owned sneakers sold for more than US$300, including Jordan, Yeezy, Adidas, New Balance, Vans, Asics, Reebok, Converse and Puma.

“There’s a growing army of sneaker fans in Australia – from those who want to latest hot drops to hardcore collectors after rare finds,” said eBay Australia’s senior director David Ramadge.

“We know that fakes are a real concern for buyers and this launch is part of a broader bid to tackle misconceptions about trust on our platform.

“The launch of our Authenticity Guarantee means the 12 million Australians visiting eBay each month will be able to access eBay’s huge US sneaker range while feeling confident in the item’s authenticity.”

According to a report in the AFR, a similar process was launched in eBay’s US store last October which led to triple-digit growth in sales of luxury sneakers during its first quarter.
