Amazon posts biggest day in company history

US e-commerce giant Amazon has posted its biggest day ever in company history, with sales on Prime Day, 11 July, surpassing Black Friday and Cyber Monday figures.

This is Amazon’s third annual Prime Day event offering special deals to customers who have signed up for the $99-a-year Prime membership, which includes free 2-day and sometimes same-day shipping, as well as access to Amazon’s streaming services.

Running for 30 hours from the evening of 10 July, Prime Day 2017 grew by more than 60 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The online retailer said tens of millions of Prime members made a purchase on Prime Day, more than 50 per cent higher than last year.

More new members signed up for Prime on 11 July than on any single day in Amazon history.

The best-selling Prime Day product from any manufacturer across Amazon globally was the company’s own wallet-friendly smart speaker, Echo Dot, which runs Alexa.

In fact, several Amazon devices – Echo, Fire tablets and Kindle – had their biggest sales day ever this week. The latest television model in the company’s own private label brand of household items, Element 55-inch 4K Ultra HD smart LED TV, also broke sales records.

More than 200,000 women’s dresses and more than 200,000 light bulbs were purchased by customers in the US, and more than 3.5 million toys were purchased by customers worldwide.

In addition, tens of millions of customers used the Amazon App to purchase items on Prime Day, more than double the amount of app orders compared to last year.

“To those customers who tried Prime for the first time and our long time members, thank you for a great Prime Day,” said Greg Greeley, vice president of Amazon Prime.

“Our teams around the world will keep working to add more and more to your membership, so Prime continues to make your life better every day. We are already looking forward to our Prime Day celebration next year.”
