Amazon opens $400 million fulfilment centre in Western Sydney

Amazon Australia has opened a new logistics facility in Horsley Park, Western Sydney, backed by a $400 million capital investment.

The project aims to expand inventory storage and speed up deliveries for domestic shoppers.

Spanning approximately 80,000sqm, the facility has the capacity to hold more than 10 million items listed on the company’s retail site, ranging from electronics and books to everyday household goods.

At full operation, the site is slated to employ over 1000 people. Job functions will span entry-level warehouse roles, alongside specialised positions in engineering, human resources, and safety management.

Wayne Angus, director of operations of Amazon Australia, said the Horsley Park project reinforces the company’s long-term presence in Western Sydney, noting that the infrastructure is scaled to handle rising consumer volume while improving product range and delivery timelines.

Frank Carbone, Fairfield City Mayor, added, “This facility represents an incredible investment in technology and capability, but it’s the people behind the scenes, from engineers to transport workers, who make it all happen.”

Independent merchants utilising the ‘Fulfilment by Amazon’ network will also use the hub to store and distribute smaller inventory items more efficiently across Australia.

The facility incorporates automated sorting machinery to streamline picking and packing. Environmental features include a rooftop solar array, motion-activated lighting, thermal insulation, and rapid-roller dock doors designed to minimise energy consumption.

Following the opening of the Horsley Park hub, Amazon Australia’s New South Wales network comprises four fulfilment centres and five delivery stations.

Last month, Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days drew nearly $10 billion in sales.
