AI, drones lead Walmart’s adaptive retail innovations

Walmart has introduced drone delivery service and AI-powered shopping assistant as part of its retail innovations to adapt to the changing customer demand.

The company plans to integrate drone delivery into its app later this month, starting with eligible customers in Dallas Fort-Worth.

The integration will be done in phases as more drone delivery sites launch and drone providers receive additional regulatory approvals. The company began trialing drone delivery in 2021 and is now capable of providing the service to 75 per cent of the Dallas Fort-Worth population.

Walmart also launched GenAI search experience on its website and app, enabling customers to browse based on specific use cases, generating more relevant and cross-category results. The  other AI-powered features include product reviews, product summarisations and product comparisons.

The company is now testing a GenAI-powered shopping assistant, which can engage in conversations with customers to help them make the best choice during their shopping journey.

In April, the retailer began testing a new feature called replenishment for its InHome service. Powered by AI, replenishment uses a personalised algorithm to predict customer needs and automatically place items into the cart.

The trial received positive feedback from customers, who noted the service provided them with increased flexibility, time savings and a level of precision in the items added.

“Driven by our commitment to help our customers live better, we’re constantly working to create shopping experiences that are convenient, engaging and personalised,” said Tom Ward, chief e-commerce officer at Walmart.

“By consistently pushing the boundaries, we’re continuing to lead the industry in service of our customers.”
