Ebay completes acquisition of Depop
Ebay has finalised its acquisition of fashion resale platform Depop from Etsy for approximately $2 billion in cash (USD$1.4 billion).
The transaction value includes a base purchase price of $1.71 billion, along with $284.7 million in net purchase price adjustments and interest, subject to standard post-closing terms.
The deal was completed following regulatory approval and the fulfilment of closing conditions.
Etsy plans to allocate the net cash proceeds for general corporate purposes, including accelerating its share repurchase program, as outlined in its shareholder letter dated April 29.
Under the terms of the agreement, Depop will operate as a complementary standalone business within Ebay, maintaining its distinct brand, platform layout, and corporate structure.
To support Depop’s operations, Ebay intends to integrate backend capabilities, including shipping systems, personalisation features, and compliance protocols.
“As a global leader in consumer-to-consumer (C2C) and recommerce, Ebay’s acquisition of Depop further strengthens our C2C value proposition,” said Jamie Iannone, CEO of Ebay.
“This combines two distinct customer experiences and expands our reach with the next generation of buyers and sellers.
Our goal is to preserve Depop’s strong brand, community, and product experience while helping the team accelerate the roadmap that is already underway and explore synergies with Ebay to enhance our combined growth potential,” added Iannone.
Earlier this month, with more than 56 million users globally, Depop responded to the remarkable growth it has experienced in Australia by removing seller fees on its platform.
