Trade Me signs on to Online Scams Code

Online marketplace Trade Me has signed on to the New Zealand Online Scams Code, supporting the protection of consumers from ‘sophisticated’ scammers across its platform.

The voluntary industry framework, developed and launched by Tech New Zealand in March, requires participating digital platforms to commit to 38 distinct actions to prevent, detect, and respond to online fraud.

Joining founding members Google, Meta, and TikTok, Trade Me has become the program’s latest signatory.

The code covers operational areas such as account blocking, scam reporting, content takedowns, advertising standards, messaging security, law enforcement, and intelligence sharing.

Tech New Zealand CEO Graeme Muller said the entry of a major domestic platform into the agreement strengthens consumer protection against increasingly well-resourced and scaled digital scam operations.

“The New Zealand Online Scams Code is a practical, public commitment from the digital industry to protect the people who use our platforms every day,” said Muller.

“Trade Me’s participation adds further weight to this collective effort and reinforces the importance of industry leadership in keeping New Zealanders safer online.”

Trade Me head of marketplace and jobs, Nicole Williams, noted that addressing increasingly complex digital scams requires cross-industry collaboration as ‘a united front’, while sharing intelligence and closing systemic gaps.

Bringing together senior government representatives, policymakers, and industry leaders from across Aotearoa’s technology ecosystem, the program presents the core belief that ensuring the online safety of New Zealanders is a collective responsibility.

Earlier, the platform tipped a circular economy worth $5.2 billion
