Online spending sees double-digit growth ahead of Christmas
Australians spent a record $25 billion shopping online in the July-September quarter, marking a strong start to the new financial year ahead of the peak shopping season.
According to Australia Post’s latest Quarterly E-commerce Report, online spending soared 17 per cent year-on-year and 6 per cent quarter-on-quarter. The average basket size fell 6.8 per cent to $90, as shoppers indulge in small luxuries rather than big-ticket purchases.
Online Marketplaces remained the top-performing category, generating $6.1 billion in spending (up 20 per cent), followed by food and liquor at $5.3 billion (up 21 per cent), and fashion at $3.6 billion (up 11 per cent).
Value continues to drive shopping decisions, with nine in 10 shoppers planning to shop the sales despite cost-of-living pressures.
By geography, NSW residents shopped the most online, followed by Victoria and Queensland.
“With Black Friday and Christmas approaching, Australians are preparing for one of the year’s busiest shopping periods,” said Chelsea O’Reilly, Australia Post GM of enterprise and government.
“Shoppers are planning ahead and seeking value, but price is not the only priority. As the peak season begins, fast, flexible and reliable delivery will be increasingly important for a positive shopping experience.”
To prepare for the busy delivery period, Australia Post has invested in infrastructure and will bring on thousands of additional team members to help keep parcels moving.
“Customers can also stay on top of their deliveries through the AusPost app, with real-time tracking and notifications providing greater visibility every step of the way,” O’Reilly added.
