Nike, Alipay and Ant Group to launch shoe recycling mini program

To encourage consumers to recycle worn-out shoes, Nike has launched the “Recycle-A-Shoe” mini program on the third-party online payment app, Alipay.

Chinese customers can arrange to have their worn-out Nike shoes collected via the app, while receiving points in Alipay’s green mini program, Ant Forest.

The shoes will be dismantled and re-processed into sustainable sports courts through Nike Grind technology.

Stanley Chang, VP of operations and logistics of Nike Greater China, said through the partnership with Ant Group, Nike can reach more consumers using the Alipay platform.

“In China, Nike continues to strive toward its goal of ‘Move to Zero’ and encourages the public to take part in environmental protection.“

Cheng Jiang, GM of the social good department of Ant Group, added the private sector needs to “encourage more environmental-friendly actions” among consumers while committing themselves to “reducing” carbon emissions in their business operations.

On a global scale, Nike’s “Recycle-A-Shoe” program has been active for 30 years and has recycled more than 30 million pairs of worn-out shoes and over 120 million pounds of footwear factory materials. They’ve been made into basketball courts,  running tracks, yoga equipment, soccer fields and interior decoration.
