Most Australians plan to shop online more post virus

Almost two thirds of Australian consumers intend to do more of their shopping online than before the coronavirus outbreak, according to research from software comparison platform Capterra.

The new research, that examined the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on Australian shopping habits, showed that 62 per cent of consumers will seek to make purchases online, despite the fact that 31 per cent of respondents reported having already fallen victim to internet shopping scams.

A full 90 per cent of survey respondents engaged in e-commerce purchases at least once this year, while 56 per cent said that they would quit an online store if their preferred payment method was not available.

The firm also noted a 47-per-cent increase in business professionals searching for e-commerce software during the period when lockdown measures were introduced in May above the month previous, and a 61-per-cent rise in business searches for distribution software.

“While there is still a desire from consumers to shop in-store, retailers can take the increase of online shopping in Australia as a queue to invest more in their digital shopping services,” said Capterra content analyst Anna Hammond.

“How consumers will choose to shop post Covid-19 is difficult to predict, but one thing is for certain: brands that provide the most seamless and informative online experience now will better position themselves to succeed during a time of uncertainty.”
