International: Carousell to open pre-loved luxury store in Singapore
Singaporean e-commerce platform Carousell will open a retail store for second-hand luxury handbags in the city-state later this week.
The 1400sqft store, named Carousell Luxury, will open at The Centrepoint on September 23, The Straits Times reported. This is the company’s first offline store under its own brand.
The space will offer handbags and other accessories from luxury labels such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, and Yves Saint Laurent.
According to Tresor Anne Tan, director of client relations at Carousell Group, the store operates on a “net-earnings model”, in which the sellers agree upfront on the amount they will receive once an item is sold.
Items are priced around market rates despite the additional cost of running a store, but Carousell takes a cut of about 25-30 per cent of the consignment price, to cover digital marketing, product photography and other services.
The store also offers both trade-in and direct buy-out options. A team of appraisers will be in charge of checking the materials, stitching and embossing details.
Tan told The Straits Times that the new opening comes as luxury goods consumers are becoming more conscious of economic value and financial sustainability. She added that operating a physical store offers some advantages over online, as buyers can inspect products in person and benefit from the company’s authentication process.
Carousell carried out a soft launch of the retail model last month, which it said attracted buyers and sellers aged from their mid-20s to late 50s, mostly professionals, managers, executives and technicians. Items at the store typically sell within two to four weeks.
Last year, Carousell acquired luxury reseller LuxLexicon to expand its premium offerings.
