Ikea launches smart lighting range with mobile app

Swedish flatpack furniture retailer has launched a new range of Smart Lighting products as part of its ongoing Smart Home project, aimed at the seamless integration of technology into homes.

The new collection includes TRÅDFRI LED bulbs, FLOALT LED light panels, SURTE and JORMLIEN LED light doors for cabinets, as well as a remote control, a gateway kit and app, a motion sensor kit and dimming kits to control lighting remotely and adjust it for specific activities.

The TRÅDFRI app is available for phones and tablets.

Ikea’s Smart Lighting collection is a plug and play solution, meaning there is no need for hard-wiring or hiring an electrician. To get started, customers simply swap a regular globe for a smart TRÅDFRI globe.

“Ikea Smart Lighting was designed to enable people to have better lighting at home, in an easy and affordable way. There are endless possibilities with the collection, for example it can be set up so create a different type of light for early mornings, another setting for late nights and one for working or cooking.

“We also know that being able to dim and adjust lighting is one of the things that people look for and appreciate at home, and being able to do this remotely or via the app with Smart Lighting makes the collection really exciting.

“The Ikea vision is to bring affordable home furnishing solutions to the many people. We know from research that existing smart lighting technology is perceived to be too expensive and difficult to understand, so we have worked to remove those barriers to make smart lighting more accessible,” Ikea home furnishing expert Helen Longford said.

The Smart Lighting collection is the next step for Ikea in integrating technology in home furnishing following the 2016 launch of wireless charging.

Ikea says this is just the beginning. It will continue to launch products that enable people to bring technology into their everyday lives at home.

“For Ikea it’s not just making gadgets, we want to add functionality into our entire product range by integrating technology into our home furnishing offer.

“We want to use this innovative project to help people use technology in their homes in clever ways to enrich their lives or to simply make things easier. Smart Lighting is just the beginning for us,” Longford said.
