Endeavour Group joins global program to shape online alcohol guidelines
Woolworths’ Endeavour Group has partnered with the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking to help establish global guidelines for the sale of alcohol online.
Through the partnership, Endeavour joins the IARD’s 12 global beer, wine and spirit producing members, as well as its 12 online retailer members, in ensuring standards in the industry are high.
“Our ambition is to be Australia’s most responsible retailer and to operate under world leading standards, so we are pleased to have been approached by IARD to join this partnership,” said Endeavour Group managing director Steve Donohue.
Other members of the group include Asahi, Heineken and Kirin, as well as JD.com.
According to the IARD, the coalition is a world-first and Endeavour is the only Australian retailer to be involved. The coalition was formed by the IARD after the pandemic accelerated online alcohol sales.
“In Australia, Endeavour Group have been thought leaders in putting robust policies in place for the online sale and delivery of alcohol,” a spokesperson for the IARD said .
“Their learnings, expertise and partnership will be invaluable in helping to enhance safeguards across the globe.”
Endeavour Group already has strong online guidelines in place, according to Donohue. All its drivers must stay up to date with its driver training program and RSA checks, and must refuse and return delivery if there is doubt over the recipients age, or if they appear intoxicated.
“These processes are regularly checked through mystery shopping exercises, and drivers who fail these risk being terminated,” Donohue said.
