DTC sustainable womenswear label Ilio Nema debuts

New eco apparel label, Ilio Nema, has made its debut, joining the growing range of brands in Australia’s sustainable fashion industry.

Founded by Ariane Leondaridis and Katia Kelso, the sustainable brand was born in the middle of the pandemic, when the two founders spotted a gap in the market for sophisticated but easy clothing, with exquisite craftsmanship.

Inspired by Hellenic culture and mythology, Ilio Nema means ‘sun thread’ in Greek. The brand’s mission is to counteract trend-based consumption by reintroducing traditional craftsmanship to modern life.

“Our desire is to preserve items of fashion as heirlooms to be loved forever,” said Leondaridis. “We believe strongly in circular fashion and that rather than easily discarding clothes, we should be more willing to care and repair. Our unique vision for Ilio Nema was born from our mutual commitment to sustainable design and production.”

Produced in collaboration with artisanal communities in Morocco and India, Ilio Nema range features pieces made from ‘remnant fabrics’, which are often left over from other designers’ collections and destined for landfill. Hand-loomed stripe fabrics are a signature of Ilio Nema’s aesthetic. The brand’s focus will be on producing pieces that can be worn year after year, season after season.

Besides the launch of its online store, Ilio Nema will also be opening a pop-up store in Sydney from December 3 till Christmas at Surry Hills.
