Amazon readies to launch Australia’s biggest warehouse ever this year
Amazon is expecting to finish up its first robotics fulfilment centre in the Southern Hemisphere, located in Western Sydney, this year.
The centre will measure 200,000 square metres across four levels, making it the largest warehouse ever built in Australia, and will offer a range of job opportunities once open – from IT, HR and robotics specialists to packing staff to work alongside the robotic packers.
“This will be our fifth fulfilment centre [in Australia] and will effectively double our operational footprint in Australia, providing our customers with wider selection and faster delivery,” said Amazon Australia’s director of operations Craig Fuller.
“Utilising advanced technology, the robotics will enhance the efficiency of our operations as well as the safety of our associates, helping to support our Amazonians as they pick, pack and ship the millions of items housed within the FC to customers around the country.”
Packing staff will no longer have to go searching for items to be delivered, with robots in the centre automatically taking items to be packed to staff to be prepared for delivery. The approach will speed up packing times, and allows for more inventory to be stowed per square metre – allowing for a larger product selection.
The centre is Amazon’s second in Western Sydney, and will be able to hold up to 11 million items.
