Amazon expands parcel pick up network to Western Australia

Amazon Australia has today launched its Amazon Hub parcel pick up network in Perth, and added hundreds of new locations across existing networks in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

The expansion of its pick up network comes after the surge of Australians having tried online shopping for the first time during the Covid-19 crisis, with the network now available at more than 750 locations across the country.

“Last year most of us spent more time at home than ever before, with nearly half of Australians also increasing their online shopping habits,” said Amazon Australia’s director of operations Craig Fuller.

“Many of us are now returning to the office on a full- or part-time basis and have less consistency about when we will be home. [We] are pleased to be able to extend this network to our West Australian customers.”

According to independent research, commissioned by Amazon Australia, one-in-five Australians don’t have a secure location to have parcels left at home, and prefer to have goods left in pick up locations to be picked up later.

According to the latest NAB Online Retail Sales Index, Australians spent $46.9 billion on online retail in the year to February, which landed at about 13.2 per cent of total retail trade for the year, and 48.4 per cent higher than the same period to February 2020.

However, it’s possible February will be the last month of strong annual comparisons, warned NAB chief economist Alan Oster, as the high growth period of 2020 is to hit the rear-view starting March.
