Amazon expands five-hour delivery schedule

Amazon Australia has expanded its shipping options for Prime members in Sydney and Melbourne, introducing three new delivery windows: Overnight, afternoon same-day, and evening same-day. 

The expanded service applies to some 1 million products in Sydney and over 500,000 in Melbourne, covering categories including electronics, household essentials, apparel, and books.

The service provides delivery times as short as five hours for eligible orders exceeding $49.

Under the new schedule, customers placing orders by 10pm can receive shipments between 4am and 8am the following day. 

Orders placed by 8am are scheduled for afternoon delivery between 2pm and 6pm, while midday orders are designated for arrival between 5pm and 10pm. 

The rollout coincides with a nationwide launch of ‘Amazon Day’, a feature enabling Prime members to consolidate multiple weekly purchases into a single designated delivery day to reduce packaging and household trips.

“Speed and convenience have always been at the heart of our delivery investment in Australia,” said Arno Lenior, director of Prime at Amazon Australia. 

“We’re seeing more demand from customers for delivery options that fit around their lives, not the other way around. Many Prime members already enjoy Same-Day delivery by 10pm, but today we’re going further by introducing new afternoon, evening, and overnight delivery windows on a huge selection of products.”

According to data from YouGov, 55 per cent of residents in Sydney typically wait three or more business days for online orders to arrive, while 80 per cent identify free or fast shipping as a primary consideration when purchasing online.

For third-party merchants using the Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) program, their inventory will be automatically eligible for the accelerated delivery windows.

Amazon plans to invest $1.6 billion between 2024 and 2027 to establish five new operational facilities, taking the company’s regional infrastructure to eight fulfilment centres and 12 logistics sites.
