Amazon Books to open in Chicago

Amazon has plans to open another bricks and mortar bookstore in Chicago in 2017. This is the fourth location to be confirmed since the e-commerce giant opened its first physical bookstore, Amazon Books, in Seattle in November last year. San Diego and Tigard, a city near Portland, Oregon, will also soon get an Amazon Books. Rumours of a fifth location in New York City have not been confirmed by Amazon.

The additional locations were announced after CEO of of US shopping centre group General Growth Partners Sandeep Mathrani said Amazon planned to open “300 to 400” physical bookstores during an earnings call in February. He later walked back his comment, saying he did not intend to represent Amazon’s plans. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told shareholders at a meeting in May that the company would definitely open more physical stores, but he did not know how many.

Amazon Books in Seattle, the only location currently in operation, sells books that receive high ratings on Amazon.com and sells them at the same highly discounted prices as online. The bricks and mortar stores also stock Amazon’s electronic devices, including Kindle and Echo, a smart home automation device that answers queries and enables voice command of services like Spotify and Uber.

At the shareholder meeting in May, Bezos said the company is focused on learning what it can from its foray into physical stores. This involves connecting customers’ online data to their offline purchase behaviour.
