Amazon Australia eliminates single-use plastic in delivery

Amazon Australia said it has stopped using single-use plastic delivery bags and envelopes in its packaging as part of its environmental sustainability commitment.

Instead, the e-commerce giant now uses recyclable paper and cardboard alternatives to pack items sold on its website, including those sold by third-party selling partners that use Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA). Even the tape is recyclable.

“Moving to 100 per cent recyclable delivery packaging in Australia is a major milestone for us,” said Janet Menzies, Amazon Australia’s country manager.

“This project has been almost two years in the making, following a rigorous process of product development and testing to ensure the paper envelopes can also withstand the delivery process and customer orders arrive safely.”

Recently, Amazon Australia invested in three automated paper packaging machines that pack single products in paper bags made on demand for the item.

“This initiative showcases their ability to pivot towards solutions that are not only better for the
environment but also aligned with the growing demand for more readily recyclable materials,” said Chris Foley, Australian Packaging Covenant CEO.

Amazon is also a co-founder and signatory to The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040.
