ACCC secures TPG undertaking over Google search services
Mobile network operator TPG has given an undertaking to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) to address competition issues relating to Google’s search services in the country.
After learning that TPG had agreed to pre-install Google as the default search service on Android devices it supplied since 2018, the ACCC sought an undertaking that includes TPG agreeing not to renew or enter into any similar agreements with Google in the future.
This comes after the regulator accepted similar undertakings from Telstra and Optus regarding the same matter.
“We are pleased that now all three mobile network operators in Australia have responded to the ACCC’s competition concerns by offering these undertakings,” said ACCC commissioner Liza Carver.
The undertakings will provide Australian consumers with more choice about the digital platforms and services they use, and encourage more competition, Carver added.
TPG, Telstra and Optus are able to enter into agreements with Google to offer Google’s search services as long as they comply with their undertaking, according to the ACCC.
