Amazon reveals best-selling products since launch
Amazon has revealed the best-selling products since launching its retail offering in Australia last week.
According to the online retail giant, technology and books dominated Australian shopping carts, with video games representing the top four most-purchased items.
“In the run up to Christmas it is not surprising to see video games featuring prominently in the top ten,” said Rocco Braeuniger, Country Manager of Amazon Australia.
“Outside of the top ten, Australians have been buying everything from daily essentials, including nappies and socks, to bigger purchases such as wearable tech and cameras.”
But while the first purchase made on Amazon.com.au was L’Oreal Paris True Match Foundation, the top five best-selling products in NSW, ACT, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia are entirely technology based.
Only Tasmania and Northern Territory buck the trend with books, makeup and household goods making it to their top five best-selling products.
Meanwhile, customers in NSW have made the most purchases so far, with the Kindle Paperwhite being the most popular product in the state.
Amazon last week launched in Australia with “millions” of products across 23 categories, representing the biggest launch in company history.
However, many analysts and consumers were underwhelmed by the initial offering, describing the range as “patchy” and prices as too high.
As Costumes.com.au founder Nathan Huppatz told Internet Retailing, Amazon might technically have “millions” of products for sale, but a large chunk of its inventory is likely comprised of books and e-books.
Still, Huppatz believes things will improve over time, a sentiment echoed by Amazon’s Braeuniger.
“We focus on the Australian customer and on long term success. With this in mind we continue to work hard to deliver great customer experience and fast delivery; and to provide customers with an ever-increasing selection of products at low prices,” he said.
