Woolworths brings its eStore tech to New Zealand’s South Island

Supermarket giant Woolworths is bringing “state of the art” micro-fulfilment technology to its Christchurch store, increasing its online capacity by 4,000 orders per week.

The business’ Moorhouse store will be fitted out with Order Storage Retrieval units, which will deliver necessary items to the team’s personal shoppers, allowing for faster packing and delivery.

The store is the latest in New Zealand to receive the upgrade, following the launch of its Auckland and Wellington eStores.

According to Countdown general manager of brand and Countdown X Sally Copland, online orders in the Canterbury region have jumped 30 per cent in the last year.

“Our Christchurch customers’ expectations and demand for online shopping are continuing to rise, so investing in technology to support that is more important than ever,” said Copland.

“We want to make sure we’re meeting this continued need… The new micro-fulfilment technology will help us pull together packaged goods in minutes, saving our personal shoppers precious time to select quality fresh food for our customers, but it will also help us take some congestion out of our supermarkets as well which we know will be appreciated by local shoppers.”

The Moorhouse store will service the online delivery orders for five additional supermarkets: Countdown The Palms, Eastgate, Colombo Street, Church Corner and Northlands.

Online pick up orders will still be fulfilled by each store’s local team.
