Wonky Box launches sustainable fresh flowers delivery service

New Zealand sustainable delivery company Wonky Box has launched Wonky Flower, a flower-delivery service, to upcycle unsold flower stems, in collaboration with flower supplier Burwood.

“Stems that are slightly too long, too short, curved, or surplus to demand are discarded, not because they lack beauty, but because they don’t meet the industry’s idea of ‘market-ready,’ said Katie Jackson, Wonky Box’s co-founder.

Instead of being thrown away, flower bouquets that are not in good shape and do not meet buyers’ criteria from the Burwood grower can now be delivered and reused in Kiwi homes.

Without intermediaries or a long detour, customers can directly purchase and receive a Wonky Flower box, which includes 15 farm-fresh stems and a step-by-step arranging guide.

“Much like our approach with fresh produce, the stems available through Wonky Flowers will be highly seasonal, changing week to week based on what’s in surplus or falls just short of retail standards,” said Angus Simms, Wonky Box’s co-founder.

“Through our work with Wonky Box on fresh produce, we’ve seen firsthand the positive impact their model offers,” said Greg Dunn, head grower of Burwood.

Wonky flower boxes are available on the company’s website, with delivery starting at $52 plus shipping fees.

Launched in 2021 by Angus Simms and Katie Jackson, Wonky Box is a startup delivery service that works to reduce unnecessary waste and support local suppliers by delivering fresh produce that’s gone unsold due to retail standards.
