Temu enters Vietnam, faces ban in Indonesia

Chinese e-commerce platform Temu is expanding in Southeast Asia with its recent launch in Vietnam, but is encountering difficulties due to the Indonesian authorities’ ban.

Temu, owned by PDD Holdings, was founded in September 2022 and has since expanded to several countries including the US, Canada, Australia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

According to Vietnamese media sources, the current version of Temu in the country is yet to be fully developed. The platform allows local consumers to purchase goods from China via two shipping units, Ninja Van and Best Express, and only accepts credit card payments.

There are also speculations that the company is in talks to acquire one of Vietnam’s local e-commerce sites.

In addition to the Vietnam launch, Temu has also entered Brunei. However, its Southeast Asia expansion strategy is facing challenges in Indonesia.

According to the South China Morning Post, Indonesia has banned the Chinese online marketplace to protect local micro, small, and medium-sized businesses and to keep inexpensive products out of the country.
