Nearly half of Gen Z shoppers encounter fake websites
Nearly half of Australian Gen Z shoppers have encountered fraudulent websites because of their eagerness to score a deal quickly and their inclination towards trending products and social media.
PayPal research shows that 44 per cent of Gen Z shoppers have come across fake websites, compared with a national average of 30 per cent.
About 70 per cent of Gen Zs are targeted by scam emails and 67 per cent are receiving scam text messages claiming to be from legitimate businesses. Meanwhile, 51 per cent admitted to using free Wi-Fi networks without checking if they were secure.
“The end-of-year sales are a great way to snag a bargain, and online shopping is definitely the most convenient way to access deals across multiple outlets, make quick price comparisons and organise deliveries,” said Dan Grant, consumer shopping expert at PayPal Australia.
“However, Aussies should be extra vigilant during the sales period and recognise the signs of fake deals and sites.”
The National Anti-Scam Centre (NASC) also reminds online shoppers to remain vigilant, noting that online shopping scams account for 50 per cent of the fake or malicious websites taken down in the past three months.
“I would remind everyone to be extra wary of online shopping scams and if you are offered a product or service at a price that seems too good to be true, then it probably is,” said Catriona Lowe, ACCC deputy chair.
