Melbourne restaurants launch online Asian grocer

Melbourne hospitality company Commune Group has launched a specialty online food store known as the Golden Grocer.

Commune Group, which is behind a number of Melbourne restaurants including Tokyo Tina and Hanoi Hannah, said the e-commerce website offers restaurant quality Asian goods, fresh produce, sauces and ready-to-eat meals that are made fresh by Commune chefs.

The site also offers heat-and-eat frozen meals including Bo Kho Vietnamese beef stew; Kimchi Bolognaise and Coconut-Poached Chicken Breast.

Golden Grocer concept founder and creative director Simon Blacher said he had been planning the move for some time but the Melbourne lockdown was the “catalyst” to make it happen.

“With our restaurant capacities greatly reduced, we wanted to give our customers another option besides takeaway that would support them in creating fresh, healthy and nutritious meals at home during the week without the hassle of having to go to the store,” Blacher said.

“We have access to the best producers in Melbourne and so we’ve created a customised online Asian grocer as a one-stop-shop for home-cooks with restaurant-quality fresh produce and pantry staples, alongside heat-and-eat frozen meals and sauces developed and made with no preservatives and no nasties in our restaurant kitchens.”

Many of the items available are brand new to the market and are only available at Golden Grocer, including sauces, marinades and curry pastes that are cooked fresh in-house.

Golden Grocer offers free delivery for orders that are worth over A$70 and are within 15km of Hanoi Hannah New Quarter, Richmond. All other orders need to be collected in person.
