HP seeks regulatory nod for setting prices on a planned online platform

Computer manufacturer HP New Zealand has sought authorisation from the Commerce Commission to engage in resale price maintenance on a planned online store.

HP, which does not currently sell direct to consumers in New Zealand, plans to launch an e-commerce platform in New Zealand, which would be run by a third-party distributor.

In a statement, the commission said HP wants authorisation to specify prices of its products on the third party-run platform, along with controlling marketing and product supply.

“This will only apply to products sold through the HP online store or future HP online marketplace stores,” the commission said.

Under consumer laws, the commission can authorise retail price maintenance if it is satisfied that the conduct will be likely to result in a benefit to the public.
