Getir closes acquisition of FreshDirect

Online grocery company FreshDirect has been acquired by ultrafast delivery service provider Getir from Ahold Delhaize USA.

With the acquisition, Getir expects to accelerate the growth of its delivery service in the US and anticipates FreshDirect’s products, especially fresh goods, to be more attractive to its New York tri-state area customers.

FreshDirect has a fleet of 400 trucks and a 640,000sqft production and distribution center in the Bronx, and its customers are expected to get their grocery deliveries faster with the merger.

Ahold Delhaize USA CEO JJ Fleeman said that the sale of FreshDirect has been a difficult decision for the company.

“However, our strength as a grocery retailer in the US is the true omnichannel experience – a combination of online and in-store – where we have leading brands and market share, strong store density and online presence, and a deep heritage of customer loyalty and relationships,” said Fleeman.

“With this decision, we will increase our focus on omnichannel – our biggest growth opportunity.”
