Dendy pays penalties for alleged ‘drip pricing’ practices

Cinema chain Dendy has been fined $19,800 over ‘drip pricing’ practices that allegedly failed to prominently indicate a single-figure total charge of its movie tickets sold online.
Instead of displaying the unavoidable per-ticket booking fee, the company vaguely showed the final single price for tickets until the last stages of the online transaction, which is alleged to breach Australian Consumer Law according to the ACCC.
“By initially only displaying part of the total price for a movie ticket, Dendy has reduced the ability of consumers to make an informed purchasing decision,” said Catriona Lowe, ACCC’s deputy chair.
The ACCC stated that consumers can be misled into purchases without intending or consenting to buy at a price with additional fees when businesses initially show only part of the price upfront, revealing the final charge only at the last step of the buying process online.
“We encourage all businesses to review their online pricing practices to ensure they are complying with their obligations under the consumer law,” said Lowe.
