Coles opens first automated customer fulfilment centre

Coles has opened its first automated customer fulfilment centre (CFC) in Truganina, Victoria, which it says will enhance the level of online service it can deliver.

The newly inaugurated CFC is the first of the two CFCs to launch this year as part of Coles’ $400 million partnership with online grocery solutions provider Ocado.

“This transition from a local, store-based fulfilment model to a central, world-class facility will enable us to better serve the greater Melbourne region, home to more than 5 million people,” said Leah Weckert, Coles CEO.

The CFC features artificial intelligence, advanced robotics and automation for picking, packing, and delivering online orders.

The site has a footprint of more than 87,000sqm and can accommodate 3 million stock units.

It has a centralised hub called ‘The Hive’ with more than 700 bots fulfilling a customer order containing 50 items in just five minutes.

“As these CFCs ramp up both here in Victoria and in NSW, Coles Online customers in metropolitan Melbourne and Sydney will get to experience a game-changing difference in the quality of service available online,” said Tim Steiner, Ocado Group CEO.
