Australia Post to open largest-ever South Australia parcel facility by 2028

Australia Post has announced plans for a new parcel facility in South Australia worth nearly $500 million, its largest investment in the state.

The new 83,000sqm site, located at the former Holden plant in Elizabeth, will open in 2028 and serve as the first fully combined Australia Post and StarTrack facility in the country.

The facility will support deliveries across South Australia for the next 20 years and feature world-leading sortation technology capable of processing up to 400,000 parcels a day, double the capacity of the current Adelaide Airport Parcel Facility.

“South Australia continues to experience year-on-year e-commerce growth, with 80 per cent of residents shopping online in the past year,” said Australia Post Group CEO and MD Paul Graham.

“As online shopping habits evolve, it’s critical that Australia Post invests in infrastructure that gives us a competitive advantage,” he said.

“This parcel facility will be the largest in the country and the blueprint for our most technically advanced facilities going forward. It forms part of our long-term strategy to modernise our network, improve efficiency and maintain our role as Australia’s trusted delivery partner, for consumers and businesses alike.”

The Pelligra Group has been appointed to develop the project, and will target a 5-star Green Star rating and feature advanced on-road sustainability technology.

“This project will provide a broad range of benefits to South Australia, and we’re excited to be a part of that,” said chairman Ross Pelligra.

“We’re proud that Australia Post selected us to help them breathe new life and activity into a site with significant industrial heritage and help transform it into a state-of-the-art facility focused on keeping South Australians connected.”
