AU Post break records with Christmas deliveries

Australia Post has delivered a record breaking number of parcels over the 2016/17 peak period, processing more than 34 million parcels in December, which is a 21.5 per cent increase on last year.

75 per cent of all parcels delivered over the period were bought online, translating to more than 5.3 million kilos of freight and 15,000 operating courier vehicles. Australia Post’s parcel collect service experienced 150 per cent year-on-year growth over the period, complemented by 50 per cent YoY growth in parcel locker usage.

“We delivered a record number of parcels during the Christmas and New Year period, and continued to see strong volumes throughout January as Australians took advantage of extended Boxing Day sales,” said Australia Post’s ecommerce general manager, Ben Franzi.

With more than two-million customers now registered for MyPost deliveries, the company received over 300,000 requests for their safe-drop service, where a customer asks for the parcel to be delivered to a safe spot at their house when they aren’t at home.

December 19, which was the busiest day of the period, saw 2.2 million parcels delivered. Franzi said appliances and homewares were particularly popular over the period.

“Australians love a bargain and love entertaining during summer, and this has certainly been reflected in the online purchases we are seeing, with homewares and appliances among the most popular items,” he said..
